Near infrared spectroscopy is an important diagnostic analytical tool in a wide variety of industries, including agriculture, medicine, chemical, and pharmaceutical production.  The information obtained with this technique is used for checking source materials, process intermediates, and characterization and validation of finished products.

In Spectral, or Chemical, Imaging systems the single detector is replaced by a camera which extends this technique to simultaneously record tens to hundreds of thousands of spectra from a 2-D heterogeneous object.   Analyzing the data provides information about the quantities and the spatial distribution of the target’s constituents.

Examples in pharmaceutical applications:

Examples in the food industry:

    • Blend uniformity of powders
    • Distribution and concentration of active ingredients and excipients identification of adulterated or fraudulent products
    • Freshness inspection
    • Location of defects
    • contents distribution

Potential applications that need to be explored include inspection of impurities in semiconductors and in the manufacturing of lotions and non-woven materials.

The HySPEC™ offered by OPOTEK is a Spectral Imaging instrument based on tunable laser technology. The core technology is an Optical Parametric Oscillator (OPO) that generates a high intensity, spectrally pure, laser beam that is tunable over a wide spectral range.
